Take a bus back towards the airport to visit Parc Phoenix. It's a cross between a botanical garden and a theme park. Horticulturalists will marvel at over 2,500 plant species that are grown here, some rare, and all protected by the Mediterranean setting. The tropical glass house, 7,000-square metres and 25-metres high, is one of the biggest in the world. It presents the visitor with seven different tropical climates, from a forest of tree ferns to a vast collection of rare orchids, thanks to state-of-the-art technology.
The Parc also houses many exotic species from the animal world. Marine animals such as sharks, rays, and spectacled Caymans feature here. A tribe of iguanas share the same greenhouse with many exotic birds such as corals, Technicolor-feathered macaws, Chinese peacocks, and nine birds of prey including the now-famous harfang snowy owl for Harry Potter fans. The park offers seasonal exhibitions and activities for children, ensuring that all age groups are catered to. Younger children will enjoy the extraordinary array of automated dinosaurs and mock temples. The star attraction of the park is the butterfly sanctuary. It is the home of over 300 animals with a bear mountain, tiger zone, crocodile beach, and an African plain. There are also farm animals in a setting of lakes, islands, and waterfalls. Open every day, all year round. Or head to Monaco where the kids can enjoy the Oceanographic Museum. If Monaco whets the kids appetite for more underworld adventures, then Marine Land in Antibes is open all year round. It claims to be the greatest marine show in Europe with dolphins, Orcas, and seals. In addition, there is a 30-metre long shark tunnel.
Nearby at Antibes Land, kids can enjoy all the fun at the fair with rides and shows. It's open from June to September, every day. Here you will also find La Petit Ferme, where young children can enjoy a puppet theatre, a children's workshop, a magic tunnel, and mini-golf as well as a host of farm animals.
If slides and adrenaline are for you, head to the outside waterpark also in Antibes. It's open from mid-June to the beginning of September. If you want to take to the seas, Trans Côte d'Azur runs sea excursions along the coast departing from Nice. They also offer a trip on a glass-bottomed boat Try exploring caves and caverns with Nice Diving. English speaking instructors are available and they offer diving excursions and courses for divers from seven years old. For a sea adventure of a different kind, discover dolphins and whales with Acti Loisirs. Boats depart from Villefranche-sur-Mer from June to September. Please check their website for days of departure, usually Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
If you want to take advantage of the smooth Promenade des Anglais and do as the locals do, hire a bike or skates. Roller Station conveniently located on the Promenade, just near the Old Town, provide mountain bikes at a cost € 5/hour, or € 15/day. Photo ID is required as a deposit. It's easy and safe to bike or skate around the Promenade as dedicated cycle routes stretch around Nice, including right along the Promenade des Anglais.
Departing regularly from the Promenade des Anglais is the Nice Tourist Train and Tourist Bus. The tourist train is a fun way to view the Promenade, the Old Town, and the Chateau. The open top bus, with commentary in 7 different languages, provides a simple and convenient way to discover the city with 11 stops along the 1.5-hour long route and the option to hop on and off wherever you please, as often as you like. The bus stops at all the major art galleries (as detailed in our Art and Culture section) as well as the Port, the Cap de Nice, and Musée de Terra Amata, the Human Palaeontology Museum.
For more modest activities, just on your doorstep in Vieux Nice, kids can try their hand at pottery painting on Rue du Pont Vieux. Friendly staff will help the little ones paint onto mugs, plates, and clay animals. Perhaps to give as presents to Grandma! Very young tots will enjoy the inflatable kiddies fair, a fantasy playground consisting of an inflatable submarine with slides and ramps, a kiddies train, and a general play area with a trampoline. This is set up on Place Massena at the start of the summer season and lasts until mid-September. And finally, if you need to tire them out before bedtime, there's always aero-jumping at the beach where kids are strapped into a harness and left to bounce around on trampolines to their heart's content.
A little bit more off the beaten track, kids can have "an adventure of the history of pirates." Le Labyrinthe de L'Aventure is a large crystal maze for youngsters where English and Italian versions are offered. The attraction is in Villeneuve-Loubet.
