Au Vieux Four
1 rue Emmanuel Philbert
Often hailed as the best pizzeria in Nice, Au Vieux Four is not one to miss. Cooked in the “Vieux Four” (old oven) these pizzas are baked to perfection. Chef Pascal Fritsch was awarded for his Pizza Campagnarde, the best pizza in the Côte d’Azur, and the second best pizza in France for 2006. We know that’s a long time ago now, and Pascal isn’t always at the furnace anymore, but it’s still very, very good. In peak months, you’ll struggle to get a table if you go after 8pm, especially at weekends, but they can take reservations and speak enough English for you to call and book.
Frequented by the French locals, it’s authentic, homely and accompanied by excellent friendly service. Don’t worry if you haven’t perfected your language skills, as the waiters also speak some English. The owner, David, is almost fluent.
Whilst pizza is their speciality, you can also find a great selection of traditional Niçoise, meat and pasta dishes. The steak is often recommended as are the scallops. When it comes to desserts, you won’t be let down here either; the tiramisù should also win an award. Temptingly displayed in the chiller cabinet, it is absolutely melt-in-the-mouth delectable and should not be missed. Tiramisù translates literally as "pick me up", and this version delivers.
It's five minutes’ walk away from Place Garibaldi square, classed as the Port area, but not near the boats. For authentic, traditional pizza it’s definitely somewhere to try. Main courses start from 10,50 euro for a basic pizza, but expect to pay more for pizzas with more toppings.
Open Monday-Saturday 11:50-14:00 and 19:00-22:45
(closed Monday lunch service)
