Nice Pebbles and Riviera Pebbles. If you've ever fantasized about living on the French Riviera, renting a furnished apartment is the next best thing. Established a few years ago, the friendly agency Nice Pebbles has a wide variety of comfortable apartments to choose from, many of them in the Old Town and all less than 20 minutes' walk from the beach. Fully equipped kitchens allow you to make the most of the fabulous produce at the local markets, and a welcome pack of local delicacies comes with each rental. Riviera Pebbles has a further selection of apartments in Nice, as well as apartments and villas in other key locations along the Côte d'Azur. Note that while all apartments have kitchens, some do not have swimming pools, elevators, telephones, air-conditioning, or Wi-Fi.

We cannot recommend this apartment rental company highly enough. Nice Pebbles manages around 50 high-class properties in the city's premier zone, included the old town and harbour, and along the Promenade des Anglais. All the properties are carefully selected, presumably to minimize any complaints or hassles. Its stock is thus in excellent condition and has first-class amenities (generally MP3 docks, high-definition TVs, and designer bathrooms). Sizes vary from one-bedroom properties with large terraces, to large seaview places sleeping 10 or more guests. When booked by the week, prices work out much more competitively than a hotel, especially when traveling with a family. Booking can be made online, although due to high demand, reservations are best made as far in advance as possible.

A luxurious alternative to staying in a hotel is to hire an apartment through the super-helpful Nice Pebbles. Properties range from elegant, antique-dotted hideaways to slick, super-modern renovations with home cinema systems and immense walk-in showers. The pick of the bunch include the quirky Katja (a hip mix of modern design and flea market finds) and Vincent, an opulent Old Town pad (best feature: a magnificent Philippe Starck bath at the foot of the bed).

All hail this holiday flat company set up by English couple Matt and Gayle. Their concept is simple: offering the quality of a four-star boutique hotel in holiday flats. The apartments (ranging from one to three bedrooms) are gorgeous and quipped to high standards (flatscreen TV, kitchen, linen bedding and, in some cases, wi-fi, swimming pool, balcony, etc.) Matt and Gayle also run Riviera Pebbles, with apartments in Cannes, Antibes and Monaco.

Chic, not cher, on the Riviera. Nice's largest apartment rental agency manages more than 50 properties in locations that the big hotel brands simply can't reach, including the old town and the port. All have wi-fi, washing machines, chic interiors and Egyptian cotton linen. You can book online for the Providence apartment, two minutes from the beachfront (£90 a night in August), or stay in the two-bedroom Cathédrale apartment for £100 a night in October for a minimum of four nights (quote The Times) for this special offer and 5 percent off any booking this year).
